'Nice Demo...I've been trying to re-create the tremolo tones that I used to get from my old Ampeg Gemini Series amps back in the day and the Boss TR-2 does a pretty good job of it. I really don't need anything more than the Boss to get there, it's works for most of the classic rock and country stuff that I'm playing these days. Thanks for the video, 'so easy to watch and listen too! Cheers!!

Something kinda in-between, like a CL80, works well for me in a Fender-ish amp. The V-Type is good also. Jensons and such have a bit much mid scoop for general purpose use IMO.

  • @Coolbeans1492

I think it’s a question of how they are to be used. I think the red one is like abig muff in that it is best in a clean amp because it brings the rest. Whereas dirty the Hendrix one worked best because that bass cut and mid boost allowed it to be clear. Tbh this just made the super fuzz make the most sense to me tbh. You can run it clean on the scoop setting and it’ll bring the bass and high end. Or dirty on the mid push setting which throws the highs and lows away. Dirty the mid push makes sense. Clean the scoop all day.

criminal how this misses out running delay pedals in parallel. set one to dotted eights and the other to triplets, or one to quarter notes and one to dotted eights, one to slapback and one to crotchets... the possibilities are endless. delays are far better in parallel than in series if youre using them rhythmically

I use a Fender Super Champ X2 head with the matching closed back 1x12 cab. I swapped out the speaker for a Celestion V-type. The amp is a hybrid with a digital preamp and a 6v6 tube power section. It's got a whole bunch of amp models and FX built in but I just use the clean channel with my pedalboard. The clean channel voicing is full and warm and it's got the headroom to take a push from gain pedals plus reverb/delay/all the other noises you might want to throw at it without behaving strangely or unnaturally. It gets easily quiet enough for home practice, but can growl at gigs because of the valves. I can't see myself needing anything else and will probably always keep it.

Awesome comparison! Not sure if it's just my gear but I find that I have to turn the tone knob way down to 9 o'clock or so to avoid sounding too shrill. It could be the more distorted high notes you describe here that bother me. Don't experience that with other overdrives like TS-9. Guess I'll give OD-3 a try.

Hello, I am very late to this party but wanted to say thank you for this video it helped me a lot, lot, lot. Made my decision based on this. Od3 will be my very first choice of paddle. I want to put it in front of a high gain Wild Fro from Tonecity, which I got as a present. I recently decided to take up playing the guitar again. 36 now, used to play since i was 15. when I turned 30 i suddenly stopped cause of my occupation and the loss of passion and start of some depressed phases, to a point even, when the guitar could not cheer me up anymore and i just forgot about music. Turns have tabled and... Now I got myself a Marshall origin 20h with a 2x12 cab with v30s. Guitar a Jet Js 300 which has been amazingly modified and i cannot wait until i can start my holiday at the weekend with my first practice day again. Thank you!

I strongly believe sansamps (and their derivatives) with some form of cab sim are the way to go. Its consistent analog tone and response that can integrate into the amplification/speaker system of your choice more easily than anything I know of. I prefer the pedal based sansamps. I run a compact pedalboard consisting of two different character series sansamps with a couple boost/overdrive/distortion, wah, and tc Electronic Plethora multifx (with cab sim) with the option of going into a headphone amp pedal, direct out, or line level out into ANY amp I chose. When practicing I typically go into the auxillary (flat eq) input of a Vox desktop guitar amp. If I am going live I actually go into class d solid state DV Mark head and cabinet (which is fantastic for what I am doing and doesn't restrict me in any way). Been playing for over 35 years (and am a professionally trained sound engineer to boot) through all kinds of setups and this is by far the easiest and most consistent tone with maximum flexibility at any volume level I have ever played through by far. I actually feel like I was "doing it wrong" with my previous setups. Ive done the digital modeling thing as well as the boutique tube amp thing and I will never do either again. I have the same tone and response no matter what I am doing (practice, recording, performing) or volume level. Skip all the other stuff, save tons of money in the long term, and just build a do it all pedalboard with the components of your preference (which you can upgrade/swap as you choose) with the sansamp(s) of your choice at the core and have a high quality solution for any situation you are in. My advice for beginners - buy a Vox desktop digital modeling amp (which will also give you a sample of what direction you will choose to go with far better performing sansamp analog circuits) to get you by while you build a sansamp centered pedalboard which you can later run into the aux input of the same amp. You will wind up with a rig you will know intimately and that can then be run into anything you choose with minimal stress/drama.

What do you mean by self taught? I learned from books/songs, a handful of lessons, and got tips here and there. I didn't lock myself in a room without access to any muaicians. People that can create out of thin air are geniuses. They would be creative geniuses with or without training. You're confusing correlation with causation. There are far too many highly trained incredibly creative musicians for your theory to be correct

This video will save a lot of headaches regarding pedal tremolo choices. Simple has once again proven to be the most effective. EHX makes wonderful tremolos for the price as well. The only thing that would make pedals like these better would be a Mix knob to make bias tremolo sounds more believable, an easy enough mod if you really want it.

I'd had the idea of a blend control with overdrive for about twelve years now. It started with a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. I loved the ability to blend the clean and OD, but I just don't care for Tube Screamers. I tried modding it. Reducing the mid hump, different diodes, and other things. It didn't work. I wanted a simple one knob blend pedal, maybe two knobs, the second a master output level. At that point I couldn't find such a thing. A line selector never occurred to me. Great idea.
